On 8 July, 2011, Ohio State chose to vacate the 2010 Football Season. This was the result of several NCAA rule violations by Ohio State Football coach Jim Tressel and several of Ohio State's players. Under NCAA Rules, the scores and records, on this page, are now considered null and void. However, indivdiual player records are allowed to stand, under NCAA rules.
The following is a short account of the events leading to vacating the 2010 season. This account was published in The Columbus Dispatch on 9 July, 2011:
The rationale for vacating the wins is that Tressel used players all season that he knew had likely violated NCAA rules. He learned in April 2010 that at least two players had sold Ohio State memorabilia or traded it for discounted tattoos. He kept the information to himself and signed a document before the season saying he knew of no violations.
When the NCAA investigated, Tressel still kept the information to himself. Eventually, six players were found to have violated rules. All were allowed to a play in the Sugar Bowl, a 31-26 win over Arkansas in January (2011). Later that month, Ohio State learned of Tressel's knowledge during a sweep of his email account.
Tressel resigned under pressure May 30 (2011).
Running back Daniel Herron, receiver DeVier Posey, left tackle Mike Adams and defensive end Solomon Thomas, all seniors, will be suspended for the first five games of the season under interim coach Luke Fickell. Jordan Whiting, a junior, is suspended for one game.
Quarterback Terrelle Pryor, facing a five-game suspension and under further investigation by the NCAA, quit the team in June (2011) and has entered the NFL supplemental draft.
In regards to vacating the 2010 season, the losers in the games will not be granted a victory as a result of this action. Nor, will the games count as victories or defeats for Ohio State. This also means, that officially Ohio State did not play a season of football for the first time since 1891, and that Jim Tressel's cocahing record is officially 94 - 21, instead of 106 - 22.
From a "for the record" point of view, the contents of this web page will remain as is, as it does
provide an insight to the Ohio State Football season which was not officially contested.
